Civic Engagement

The CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities has announced the 2011-12 fiscal as the “Year of Service” for the NYS community. Every month CCSD members will participate in a civic engagement initiative to help improve the surrounding NYS communities. Here’s what they’ve done so far:

March 2012 – Annual WEST Conference
CCSD supports developing and enriching the lives of women, to walk away with greater strength, purpose, and the will to overcome any obstacles, and then live up to the highest potential. A voter registration table was also setup to register voters and raise awareness of our civic duty.

January 2012 – Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” CCSD, in its pursuit to continue its commitment to service, partnered with The City College of New York, Hostos Leadership Academy and Long Island University to come together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.

December 2011 – World AIDS Day
CCSD joined in the opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. The membership partnered with the USS LGBT Task Force, helping as stewards during the City College Quilt Display, declared the largest quilt display in the nation to date.

November 2011 – ING New York City Marathon
This New York City marathon is a unique mix of athletics, neighborhood spirit, and international media attention, attracting the world’s best runners. The CCSD membership helped inspire hope and renewal for participants, spectators, and all New Yorkers.

October 2011 – CUNY FoodFEST
CCSD got their hands busy volunteering at a food festival, focused on educating and engaging participants in stimulating conversation about various topics in the food justice movements; attendants were engaged by workshops, cooking lessons, and an opportunity to meet with various food justice organizations from around the city.

October 2011 – Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
The CCSD membership joined the movement to help create a world with less breast cancer, to inspire Hope. Each step a CCSD member took was personal, helping create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays; our members proudly serve by helping people get well, stay well, find cures and fight back.

September 2011 – NY Cares Day
Budgetary concerns has forced the city to scale back funding for education in recent years. The CCSD membership participated in the NY Cares Day initiative, painting and beautify NYC public schools to help create a positive environment in which students can learn.

July 2011 – ADA BBQ Celebration
CCSD partnered with its member clubs/organizations, CUNY administration and New York officials to raise awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) throughout the five boroughs by celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a Bar-B-Q Celebration!

June 2011 – Kennel Club Annual Dog Show at CSI
Who doesn’t love doggies? Dog experts judge more than 400 dogs representing 98 breeds over the two-day event. Categories include rally, obedience, best in show, agility testing and others. CCSD members helped out with various aspects of the dog show, from course setup to attendant guides.
